About

Not everyone is good with words. Lucky for you, I am.

I’m Natalie Montanez, and I help people improve their communications — whether that means smoothing out the rough patches on an existing piece or starting from scratch with a sort-of-filled-out creative brief.

As a writer and copyeditor, I specialize in advertising, corporate / organizational communications, and nonfiction. I’m a relentless advocate for readers and customers, so my focus will be on helping you reach them effectively. That often means simplifying language and creating a brand voice that feels natural and relatable.

What makes me qualified to help you? I’ve been an in-house advertising copywriter, copyeditor, and communications specialist for organizations of all sizes, both public and private, for nearly 20 years. Some of those companies include Nordstrom, Amazon, The Seattle Times and The Walt Disney Company. (Look me up on LinkedIn and check out my copywriting portfolio.)

I’m an active member of the Editorial Freelancers Association, ACES: The Society for Editing, and the Northwest Editors Guild. I have a bachelor’s in English from the University of California, Berkeley, and a master’s in communications from Georgetown University. I also have a certificate in editing from the University of Washington and a CELTA certification for English-language instruction.

Why The Brave Beagle? During the pandemic, I adopted Buddy, a little beagle mix. He’s terrified of everything, but he tries so hard every single day. His bravery inspired me to start my own business, something I’d wanted to do for years but was too afraid to try. In honor of Buddy, reactive pets like him, and the amazing pet professionals who work in the R+ and LIMA communities, I donate 1% of my annual income to the IAABC Foundation.

Special thanks go to @macdaddyillustration for my wonderful logo and the illustration of Buddy on this page.
